The allotment - plotting and planning...
Most of what we're growing is in our minds at the moment, or still in the seed packets. So we're set for a journey of discovery this year...
In the ground we currently have globe artichokes, courtesy of the previous plot-holder, who left them. There's the fruit transplanted from our garden: rhubarb, raspberries and strawberries. Some tiny pea seedlings have been battling with the frosty nights, and broad beans, lettuce and salad leaves have been sown, as have sunflowers. And this week I uncovered a massive clump of Alchemilla mollis (lady's mantle) from under a slightly larger clump of couch grass.
Indoors, jostling for space on our windowsills are the seedlings: chillies, peppers, aubergines, tomatoes and parsley, with garlic and more broad beans outside.
And that just leaves the rest of what's on our yet-to-be-sown-or-grown list: (deep breath): basil, beetroot, borage, broccoli, carrot, chard, chive, courgette, cucumber, French beans, garlic, kale, leek, marigold, nasturtium, potato - 3 Red Roosters donated by my mum cos they'd gone a bit sprouty, pumpkin/squash - three types: Kabocha, Halloween and I forget, sage - big woody bush in situ.
